Austria and Spain are both members of the European Union and the Euro is their primary currency. Hungary hasn't converted to the Euro and still uses it's native currency, the Hungarian Forint.

Euros are widely available at most US banks and can be ordered ahead of time. Most stores in Hungarian towns accept Euros, and some even accept US Dollars, but ATM's are available should you decide to shop using Forints.

The Euro to Dollar exchange rate has been somewhat volatile recently and will affect how much spending money you should plan to bring. To check the current exchange rate, click here.

Visa and Mastercard are both widely accepted throughout Europe, and American Express is also accepted at larger stores and restaurants. Discover cards, however, are not accepted anywhere in Europe. Debit cards will also work, and you may use them to withdraw Euros or Forint from any ATM as long as you know your PIN number.
